OptiNAND, UltraSMR and ePMR reduce the total cost of ownership of units for the cloud

The new ePMR drives leverage Western Digital's OptiNAND technology to deliver a new level of capacity, performance and data resiliency. The 22TB CMR drive incorporates OptiNAND to achieve exceptional data density on a mature 2.2TB/split platform with ten drives.

Combining OptiNAND with proprietary firmware that leverages the hard drive system's hardware advances, Western Digital's new UltraSMR technology introduces large block coding and an advanced error correction algorithm that increases tracks per inch (TPI) for even more capacity.

The result is Western Digital's new 26TB UltrastarDC HC670 UltraSMR hard drive that provides 2.6TB per platter, offering 18% more capacity to cloud customers and optimizing their integration with SMR hard benefits. Cloud service providers are moving to include SMR technology in data centers, and 26TB of capacity is a critical milestone in accelerating adoption.

A unique data security

Only OptiNAND technology includes the ArmorCache write cache data security feature, which provides customers with the performance of a write cache (WCE) backed by the data protection typically achieved by disabling the write cache (WCD), for added data protection in the event of an emergency power off (EPO).

Tenfold WCD performance

OptiNAND also significantly increases performance in WCD mode, which is most evident during random writes with larger block transfers. At transfer sizes of 256KB or more in typical applications, IOPS and throughput improve by more than 40% over drives without OptiNAND, with a maximum improvement of more than 80% at a transfer size of 1MB.

Availability of 22TB CMR and 26TB UltraSMR drives

The 22TB Ultrastar DC HC570 and 26TB Ultrastar DC HC670 hard drives are being evaluated by a small number of hyperscale customers. In the summer of 2022, the DC HC570 will be widely available, and UltraSMR will be progressively delivered to our customers.
